This bowl has been shaped into a three-cornered top from a round base. It is 4.5 cm deep and 36.5 cm circumference round the top. The glaze and free-style drip decoration are in various shades of brown and tan. The impressed backstamp has a Celtic trinitarian motif surmounted by ‘Terrybaun’. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
Burkart Handarbeit (Switzerland) Plaque : Little Girl Gathering Apples
24.75 cm diam. with a handpainted relief design and the characteristic ‘Burkart Handarbeit’ backstamp on an off-white base. There are two holes for a hanging cord on the back. There are two pinhead chips on the back; otherwise the condition is very good, with no other chips and no cracks or crazing.
Tom Lochhead, Kirkcudbright (Scotland): Small Handthrown Bowl
Tom Lochhead (1917-2005) was the first person to set up a studio pottery in Scotland.
This small stoneware bowl is 7 cm deep and 9 cm diameter across the top. The underside has the incised mark ‘Lochhead, Kirkcudbright’. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
FJ? Hand-decorated Studio Pottery Bowl Dish with Cockerel Decoration
Earthenware, with a semi-matte blue-grey glaze. The outlines of the design of a cockerel’s head, flowers and leaves have been hand-incised and hand-painted. There is an incised monogram on the back which might be FJ, but I am not sure about the first letter. The monogram is repeated on the front. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
Hollow-modelled with blue-green glaze on the underside as well as the top. It has the impressed ‘Achill’ backstamp and measures 22 cm from the seal’s nose to the top of its tail. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
A bead-type oil lamp, 11.5 cm high (without the bead) and body is decorated with an ochre slip and a cobalt blue drip glaze over white. The potter’s mark, an S in a circle, is impressed near the bottom. The bead has a hole for the wick. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing. It comes with an original instruction card. The horizontal white streaks in the photo are camera flash.
6 cm high and in very good condition; the gilding on the top and bottom edges is rubbed, but there are no chips, cracks or crazing. The Maling backstamp has beneath it the number 6597, which dates it to the years 1955-1960, and the letter E which probably refers to the painter who decorated it.
This item may date from the earlier years of the pottery, which sadly closed in 2008. 5 cm high and 8.25 cm diam. across the top, it should fit a candle of about 2.25 cm diam. The glaze is a semi-matte very dark brown on the outside and a gloss white on the inside. The impressed backstamp reads Shanagarry. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
20 cm diameter and featuring a picture of a pair of black grouse, male and a female. The black-glazed rim is richly gilded. The backstamp reads: Arklow; Produced in Republic of Ireland. There are two small scratches on the rim, but they are almost invisible. Otherwise the condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
The striking colourway of aubergine and green gives a modern twist to the traditional shape of this candleholder. The backstamp is an impressed “Youghal” with a B alongside which may stand for Tony Breslin, owner and potter at Youghal. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
