Because disco was club based, there isn't much left to show for it beyond the old 12" records that are still around. Films like Saturday night Fever show a particular aspect of it, but miss the music that was being played in the best clubs.
Possibly the closest thing you can now get to being there is rare live recordings from clubs at the time. Released in 2000 by Strut and West End Records (www.westendrecords.com) was "Larry Levan Live at the Paradise Garage". This is a double CD of music recorded live in New York during 1979.
Roxy Disco main entrance, Jan 2007
Not part of the revival of disco, but still standing in the city centre of Sheffield is the building which was the Roxy Disco. Built in the 1960s as a ballroom within the huge Epic building it was originally know as the Top Rank Suite. After standing empty for several years, in April 2008 the building became the Sheffield Academy, and is once again hosting music and gigs.
