(Current Problems ; 24 ) The author was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bristol and was for four years a member of the Tribunal which took heard statements of conscientious objectors during WW2. The dustjacket has two small tears and is lightly stained and faded; the cover is slightly faded with light bumping on the corners. Dublin: Talbot Press, c. 1920. 118p, 7 leaves of plates : frontis., illus (b & w), photos (b & w). Hbk., without dustjacket. (The New Era Library). Ex-library (convent school), with just one stamp on flyleaf. Bound in olive green cloth, with blind impressed design and gilt lettering on the spine. There is bumping on the top and bottom of the spine and along part of the bottom back; the gilt lettering is worn and there is some very slight staining; otherwise the cover is in quite good condition for its age. There is some foxing on the endpapers and the pages and three small ink stains on the bottom edges and one stain on a page margin, but the text is clear and unmarked. The plates are slightly loose and the hinges a little worn, but the binding is still intact. A good copy. Price: £15, plus P & P. 6. HOBART, Alice Tisdale. The Peacock Sheds His Tail / by Alice Tisdale Hobart. 1st British edition, produced in “complete conformity with the authorised economy standards”.. London: Cassell, 1946. 313p. Clothbound in light blue, no dustjacket. The American writer Alice Tisdale Hobart (1882-1967) wrote a number of novels and some film scripts. This novel depicts in fictional form life in an Indian village in Mexico. This copy’s cover is clean, but very faded on the spine and top edges. The hinges and binding are sound; there is foxing on the back endpapers and the page edges; the text is clean and unmarked. A good copy. Price £2.50, plus P & P 7. LEONARD, Hugh. Copy signed by author. In new, uncirculated condtion. Price: £4.00, plus P & P 8. LONGFELLOW, Henry W. The Complete Poetical Works of Henry W. Longfellow : with prefatory notice : six engravings on steel. Edinburgh; London: Gall & Inglis, n.d. [1865?]. Hbk. xx, 700p : illus (b & w). There is no date on the title page, but the prefatory notice is dated 1865. Clothbound in red blocked with design in cream, gold and black on front and gold and black on spine; the design on back is plain embossed. The page edges are gilded. The cover is a little bumped and rubbed, particularly on the spine. The spine is a little faded and there is staining on all parts of the cover, but not to a degree which significantly detracts from the attractiveness of the design. The binding is sound. There is light browning and there is foxing on the first and last few pages as well as foxing on a small proportion of the remaining pages. The names of two former owners are inscribed on the flyleaf. Judging from the style and ink, one of these P.J. Rooney, was probably the original owner. The text is clear and unmarked. All in all, considering its age, I would describe this book’s condition as very good. Price: £19.50, plus P & P. 9. McMANUS, Francis. The Greatest of These / by Francis McManus. 1st edition. Dublin: Talbot Press, 1943. Hbk. with dustjacket. 231p. Irish novel: story of the varying fortunes of two friends, one of them a bishop. The dustjacket is a little marked and torn round the edges, but on the whole in quite good condition. There is some light marking on the cover and a little rubbing, with foxing on the top page edges and light browning. The binding is sound and the text clear and unmarked. A copy which appears to have been handled carefully and is in very good condition for its age. Price: £8.50, plus P & P 10. O’CONNOR, Frank. Irish Miles / by Frank O’Connor. 1st edition. London: Macmillan, 1947. Hbk, without dustjacket. 185p, 22 leaves of plates : photos (b & w). An ex-library copy, bearing the stamps and labels of Lancashire County Library in the late 1940’s early 1950’s. The green cloth cover is worn and stained; and there is some foxing and a little staining throughout. The binding is sound and the text unmarked. A very acceptable copy. Price: £4.50, plus P & P. 11. STRONG, L A G. Trevannion. 1st edition. London: Methuen, 1948. 341p. Hbk., with dustjacket. A charming novel in a fictional English setting described as a remnant of the late Victoria era. The dustjacket was designed by Edward Ardizzone. The dustjacket is torn along the bottom edge and the top of the spine and is a little stained, but Ardizzone’s front design is largely untouched. The dark blue cloth binding is slightly worn on the top of the back hinge and the top and bottom of the spine is a little bumped; there is also a slight, dark stain on the front top edge. However, the binding is basically sound. There is some light browning on the endpapers and edges, but the text is clear and unmarked. A good copy. Price: £9.00, plus P & P.
